In this thesis an attempt is made to study the effects of magnetic field on some flows in channels and past infinite plates. In chapter 1 the effect of small uniform magnetic field on separation of a binary mixture for the case of fully developed natural convection of a fluid between two heated inclined plates is investigated.In chapter 2 free and forced convection flow of viscous incompressible fluid in a horizontal wavy channel has been studied. In chapter 3 Hall current effects on unsteady flow of viscous, incompressible fluid between two horizontal parallel non conducting plates, are studied. In chapter 4 the free and forced convection flow of conducting fluid between two parallel flat plates in an inclined channel is studied. In chapter 5 the effects of magnetic field, Heat generation and homogeneous chemical reaction on unsteady free convection and mass transfer flow of viscous conducting fluid past an infinite vertical porous plate is studied.

Food grade resistant starches (RS) were prepared from 11 starches by reacting starch with a mixture of sodium trimetaphosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate in aqueous alkaline slurry. The products belong to RS4 and contain up to 100% RS when assayed with the total dietary fiber method 991.43 of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists. The RS4 starches showed low swelling power (3g/g) after gelatinization in excess water. Reversibly swellable distarch phosphates with medium swelling power (4-12g/g) were also prepared by pre-swelling of starch in aqueous alkaline solution with salt, cross-linking, purifying and gelatinizing in hot water (95°C). After 6 cycles of swelling in hot water and oven drying, a medium swelling starch made from wheat lost negligible mass and maintained granule integrity. Hamsters fed 10% of low swelling RS4 wheat starch compared to same level of cellulose in their diet showed 1) lower feed consumption, 2) lower weight gain, 3) higher level of high-density cholesterol in the blood, 4) lower level of cholesterol in the liver, and 5) higher level of colonic short chain fatty acids, especially butyric acid.

The capability to predict the nonlinear response of beams, plates and shells when subjected to thermal and mechanical loads is of prime interest to structural analysis. In fact, many structures are subjected to high load levels that may result in nonlinear load-deflection relationships due to large deformations. One of the important problems deserving special attention is the study of their nonlinear response to large deflection, postbuckling and nonlinear vibration. A two-step perturbation method is firstly proposed by Shen and Zhang (1988) for postbuckling analysis of isotropic plates. This approach gives parametrical analytical expressions of the variables in the postbuckling range and has been generalized to other plate postbuckling situations. The investigation entitled "Studies on Bacillus agaradhaerens-A Concomitant Producer of Alkaline Protease and Alkaline Amylase" deals with the screening and characterization of an alkalophile- Bacillus agaradhaerens which is a high yielding, concomitant producer of two industrially important enzymes viz. alkaline protease and alkaline amylase. This study was undertaken realizing the importance of alkaline protease and alkaline amylase in the commercial market, particularly in detergent formulation. The spectrum of applications of both these enzymes has expanded in fields like detergent formulations and in treatment of alkaline industrial wastes. Looking to wide range of commercial applications of both these enzymes, efforts were made to isolate alkalophilic bacteria that could produce both enzymes concomitantly. The corrosive effects of sulphate ions in alkaline media have not to date been clearly outlined or defined. Research of sulphate attack is at a critical stage. In spite of meaningful advances in the past few years, this problem is still not well understood. Extensive work by many researchers has been conducted on studies relating to the effect of chloride ions in acidic and alkaline media. The bulk of research work has been done in relation to stainless steels in the above-mentioned media. This research study aims to focus on a more commonly used construction material, mild steel, otherwise known as carbon steel, and to determine and define the effects of sulphate ions on their own and the effect of sulphate ions in the presence of chloride ions in alkaline media. Commercial grade mild steel was tested using the gravimetric and potentiodynamic methods, in alkaline solutions of varying concentrations of sulphate ions together with additions of different concentrations of chloride ions. Results show that mild steel material protection is seriously compromised when in the presence of highly basic media.

However, this method was found to have deficiencies in practical application. Several corrections and improvements are made to this proposed approach, which improves overall BIST generation and execution time. A method for testing the Virtex-5 FPGA Block RAMs is proposed and the suggested configuration settings are described. Four Test Pattern Generators (TPGs) are proposed to implement the BIST, which will consist of 16 configuration bit files.

Liquids in narrowly confined spaces have properties that are very different from those of the bulk. In this thesis three different systems have been studied using computer simulations. The first is a molecular dynamics study of liquid water between parallel plates subjected to an external electric field. The second study is a Monte Carlo simulation of water inside a carbon nanotube. We study the electric field dependence of the equilibrium between the empty and filled states of the nanotube. We also investigate the electric field dependence of the equilibrium between the two states of the filled tube that correspond to two orientations of the total dipole moment of the water chain along the tube axis. By studying the temperature dependence of the free energy of occupancy, we evaluate the energy and entropy of the water inside the tube relative to bulk water. Finally, these Monte Carlo methods are applied to water in hydrophobic protein cavities. The filling of nonpolar cavities with water is found to be thermodynamically favorable under conditions which are critically dependent on the cavity size and the interactions with the cavity walls.

Alkaline proteases have been sought to have applications in several industries like detergent, dairy, leather, pharmaceutical, waste treatment etc. Proteases serve as important tools in determination of structures of proteins and polypeptides. The biotechnological promise of proteases makes them an ideal candidate for structure-function relationship studies and are also wide spread in nature. Microbes serve as preferred source of these enzymes because of their rapid growth, the limited space required for their cultivation and the facility with which they can be genetically manipulated to generate new enzymes with altered properties that are desirable for various applications. In order to withstand the market, enzymes from sources that are stable, active and more reliable have been identified and pure culture was obtained. The present study here in discloses the purification of an alkaline protease from a novel strain of Exiguobacterium sps.

Alkaline proteases are robust enzymes with considerable industrial potential in detergents, leather processing, silver recovery, medical purposes, food processing, feeds, and chemical industries, as well as waste treatment. These enzymes contribute to the development of high value-added applications or products by using enzyme-aided partial digestion. Actinomycetes play an important role in the decomposition of organic matter in soil. They are the producers of most of the bioactive metabolites and industrially important enzymes. They include numerous potentially useful compounds providing the widest range and most promising array of pharmacologically and agriculturally active compounds. When compared to other microbial products as, the activity profile of actinomycete products is very broad.Enzymes produced from actinomycetes seem to be very promising as immobilized preparations for use in routine clinical diagnostic tests. Hence in the present work alkaline protease from novel Streptomyces was isolated and characterized.

Small town water supply and sanitation mirror challenges of the water sector, but are not prioritized by central government and development partners. Small towns have limited water sources and inadequate distribution networks. Water shortages in small towns complicate identification of the poor because there are many unconnected non poor residents. Mpwapwa and Nzega water utilities have a kiosk strategy to the poor and unconnected but target the poor differently. The Mpwapwa utility gives free water to poor people; Nzega utility has no free water strategy; though the utility is performing better. Small town utilities have limited capacity to run operations; and the Nzega utility contracted a private company to manage and distribute water in the town. Households have limited incomes to finance water connections and small town utilities require one-time connection fees that are too high in addition to pipes and pipefitting equipment. Alternative service providers supply water to unconnected, charge higher tariffs and are not regulated by the main utility. Sanitation is predominantly pit latrines and septic tanks; which pose contamination problems for shallows wells.

In modern technology, the mechanical behaviour of composite structures is of particular interest to engineers. It has a wide range of applications in engineering science and technology. Buckling behaviour of laminated composite plates subjected to in-plane loads is an important consideration in the preliminary design of aircraft components. During operation, the composite laminate plates are commonly subjected to compressive loads that may cause buckling if overloaded. Hence their buckling behaviours are important factors in safe and reliable design of the structures. The sizing of many structural subcomponents of the aircraft structures is often determined by stability constraints. The effect of the ply orientation, aspect ratio and length to thickness ratio plays a role in the buckling behaviour of such composite plates. Also, plates with different cut-out shapes are extensively used as structural members in aircraft design. These cut-outs can be access holes, holes for hardware to pass through, or in the case of fuselage, windows and doors. In some cases cut-outs are used to reducreduce the weight of the structure, behaviour of such plates with cut-outs is very important.

An attempt has been made in the present investigations to study the quality of underground well/tube well water samples and their interrelationship between different ions which are present in irrigation water. About 84 underground water samples were collected from representative areas of Bechraji, Mehsana,Kadi and Vijapur Talukas of Mehsana district. Irrigation water samples were analyzed for Electrical Conductivity (EC), pH, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), cations (Ca+2, Mg+2, Na+and K+) and anions (CO3-2, HCO3-1, Cl-1, and SO4-2). Various indices viz.,Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC), Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) and Soluble Sodium Percentage (SSP) were calculated from the estimated cations and anions expressed in me/L. In general, the well/tube well water samples of Mehsana district were slightly alkaline in reaction (pHvalues 7.02 to 8.21), TDS values range from 270 to 1970 ppmin study area. The maximum salt concentration was found in groundwater samples of Bechraji and Mehsana taluka and the minimum in groundwater samples of Kadi and Vijapur taluka. An increase in urbanization and industrial activities and higher exploitation of cultivable land has brought about a huge increase in the quantity of discharges and wide diversification in types of pollutants that reach rivers and other aquatic environments. Mollusca are one of the most diverse groups of animals on the planet. Fresh water snails have been used frequently as bioindicator organisms. The use of fresh water mussels for biomonitoring purpose is mostly a recent phenomenon. Fresh water snail Lymnaea acuminata is abundantly found in low lying submerged water logged areas. The snail L. acuminata breeds round the year and they are very sensitive to changes in the quality of water. Effect of seasonal changes on the inhibition of key enzymes-acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the nervous tissue of snail L. acuminata. This study shows that variant abiotic environmental factors can significantly alter the activity of AChE and ALP activity. Conclusively, the snail L. acuminata and the activity of AChE/ALP in the nervous tissue of snail can be used as bioindicator and biomarker for the prediction of water quality.

The capability to predict the nonlinear response of beams, plates and shells when subjected to thermal and mechanical loads is of prime interest to structural analysis. In fact, many structures are subjected to high load levels that may result in nonlinear load-deflection relationships due to large deformations. One of the important problems deserving special attention is the study of their nonlinear response to large deflection, postbuckling and nonlinear vibration. A two-step perturbation method is firstly proposed by Shen and Zhang (1988) for postbuckling analysis of isotropic plates. This approach gives parametrical analytical expressions of the variables in the postbuckling range and has been generalized to other plate postbuckling situations. This approach is then successfully used in solving many nonlinear bending, postbuckling, and nonlinear vibration problems of composite laminated plates and shells, in particular for some difficult tasks, for example, shear deformable plates with four free edges resting on elastic foundations, contact postbuckling of laminated plates and shells, nonlinear vibration of anisotropic cylindrical shells. This approach may be found its more extensive applications in nonlinear analysis of nano-scale structures.
