In this work, simulation and optimizations for stand-alone hybrid Photovoltaic (PV)/Wind energy systems were carried out for two local Jordanian climate conditions. The major problem that arises is by how much each of the energies should be relied upon. The use of hydrogen storage enables long term energy storage in hybrid wind-fuel cell energy system. The aim of this research is to study the feasibility of a wind-hydrogen energy system that produces electricity to households,health post, grinding facility, schools and water pumps in rural areas. The system consists mainly of wind turbines, fuel cells, electrolyzers and hydrogen tanks. The wind resource in the country was studied after selecting five representative cities that are geographically different. These are Addis Ababa, Nazareth, Mekelle, Debre Brehan and Dire Dawa.The system The best system is chosen for each location based on net present cost(NPC) and detail analysis of system performance. The results indicate that the system enables high renewable fraction with up to 8 days of energy autonomy only at moderate increase in NPC over a wind-diesel-battery system.

Escalating fossil fuel prices, growing energy demand and the increase in concerns for the environment have led mankind to look for alternate energy sources which are sustainable, benign and cost-effective. Wind energy is one of the solutions and for it to be marketable and technically feasible, proper wind resource assessment is to be done. This work analyzes wind data for Vadravadra village in Gau Island, Fiji, carries out financial analysis and uses HOMER to determine the optimum hybrid configuration for this site. It has been established for Vadravadra that (i) the annual average wind speed is 6.18 m/s, (ii) for 68 % of the time in a year the wind speed exceeds 5 m/s, (iii) highest wind speed is recorded in June and July, (iv) optimum wind turbine is Fuhrlaender 30 kW wind turbine (FL-30), and (v) estimated annual energy yield from FL-30 wind turbine is 60000 kWh. From HOMER simulations, it has been found for Vadravadra that when a wind turbine alone is installed at the site then the cost of energy (COE) is F$1.32/kWh and when a wind diesel hybrid system is considered the COE is F$1.44/kWh.

Due to random variations of wind speed, output power of a wind turbine generator fluctuates continuously. The power and voltage quality of a wind power system consisting of Induction Generator (IG) based wind turbine (IGWT), IGWT with voltage control device and Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) based wind turbine (DFIGWT) are presented in this work. Blade pitch angle control to limit the output power at turbine’s nominal power is also presented. It is reported that the DFIG-based wind turbine system can smooth the output power and also maintain the terminal voltage at a desired level, as DFIG with two back-to-back voltage source converters that use IGBTs and a capacitor acts as the DC voltage source has real and reactive power control abilities. The comparative results show that DFIGWT-based wind farm (DFIG_WF) has the best response, IGWT-based wind farm (IGWF) with voltage control device has better and IGWF has the worst response. Results indicate that the fluctuation of output power at higher rated rotor speed (near turbine’s base wind speed) and terminal voltage are almost nil for DFIG_WF. All the analysis were carried out using SimPowerSystem tool box in MATLAB.

Comparing ground measured and satellite derived data at 35 locations within Nigeria, the study concluded that remote sensing is a reliable method for analyzing solar energy for this data sparse region. An extensive amount of research on PV-Thermal collectors has been carried out over the past 25 years. The electrical conversion efficiency of solar cell is in the range of 6–15%, depending on type solar-cell at standard temperature and pressure. When a solar radiation incident on the panel it generate electricity and 75-80% of the absorbed radiation is dissipated in the form of heat to the surrounding after photovoltaic conversion. High solar irradiation increases the electrical conversion efficiency but also increases the temperature of panel. A PV/T hybrid system is a combination of photovoltaic and solar thermal system. The solar PV/T system is an integrated system which can produce both electricity and heat simultaneously. In this work, performance evaluation of PV/T hybrid water collector is evaluated and compared with the solar PV system. The hybrid design gives additional advantages, such as a reduction of the thermal stresses and hence a longer life of the PV module, high performance and reliability, low maintenance and a stabilization of the solar cell current–voltage characteristics. The collected thermal energy can be used for low temperature applications.

This is a book about whether or not solar wind ions precipitate into the upper atmosphere (ionosphere) of planet Venus. The signs of solar wind precipitation into the Martian atmosphere have been found by various scientists. Magnetic environment of both planets is almost similar and both planets do not possess global intrinsic magnetic field. Many scientists believe that interaction of solar wind with planet Venus is very much similar to Mars and solar wind precipitation also takes place on Venus. In this study, the ion data of Analyzer of Space Plasma and Energetic Atoms (ASPERA)-4, an IRF instrument onboard Venus Express, an ESA’s mission towards Venus has been used for the analysis. Role of Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) and magnetic barrier in the precipitation has also been investigated. Results show that magnetic barrier shielding on Venus is very effective against the solar wind precipitation.

This study investigates the impact of wind power on tourism on Gotland. The main objective is to identify how tourists on Gotland during their holidaying perceive the visual features associated with wind turbines in the landscape. Additionally, it is sought to establish whether tourists plan to return to Gotland despite the presence of wind power installations, with a special focus on first-time tourists. Using a structured questionnaire technique on a sample size of 735 respondents, this study reveals that 8% of tourists perceive wind turbines negatively. Next, the study identifies that the decision to return to Gotland of absolute majority of tourists, including first-time visiting tourists, is not impacted by the presence of wind turbines. Lastly, it has been concluded that a potential on the island exists to develop a form of ‘wind power tourism’.

The global warming phenomenon as a significant sustainability issue is gaining worldwide support for development of renewable energy technologies. The term “polygeneration” is referred to as “an energy supply system, which delivers more than one form of energy to the final user.” For example, electricity, cooling and desalination can be delivered from a polygeneration process. The polygeneration process in a hybrid solar thermal power plant can deliver electricity with less impact on the environment compared to a conventional fossil fuel-based power generating system. It is also THE next generation energy production technique with the potential to overcome the undesirable intermittence of renewable energy systems. In this study, the polygeneration process simultaneous production of power, vapor absorption refrigeration (VAR) cooling and multi-effect humidification and dehumidification (MEHD) desalination system from different heat sources in hybrid solar-biomass (HSB) system with higher energy efficiencies (energy and exergy), primary energy savings (PES) and payback period are investigated, focusing on several aspects associated with hybrid solar-biomass power generation installations, such as wide availability of biomass resources and solar direct normal irradiance (DNI), and other technologies. Thermodynamic evaluation (energy and exergy) of HSB power has also been investigated, along with the VAR cooling system, the modelling, simulation, optimization and cost analysis of the polygeneration hybrid solar biomass system, all accompanied by multiple case studies and examples for practical applications. This work presents results of experimental and simulation study of a solar assisted pre-cooled hybrid desiccant cooling system for building air conditioning applications in hot regions. Tests were conducted on a pre-cooled hybrid desiccant cooling test rig. Using measured data sets from the desiccant cooling system, validation of TRYNSIS model of the same cooling system was carried out. Six configurations of the cooling system were simulated for different climatic regions. Analysis demonstrated that better energy saving can be achieved by using indirect evaporative cooler for pre-cooling. For post cooling direct evaporative cooler for hot and dry regions and indirect evaporative cooler for humid regions are suitable. This work also describes the life cycle assessment of solar air heater and its energy and environmental payback periods. The CFD analysis of air collector using Fluent software has been discussed in some detail.

The present work relates to the design of a new impeller type vertical axis wind turbine, which is uses wind energy more effectively. This design presents a special frame design with vanes. The frames are connected with the shaft, which one end is connected with the electric generator. The frames are designed with angular inclinations of vanes that create cavities when vanes are closed. On the other side of the impeller, when the movable vanes are open, and the frame is under wind action,the air passes freely through the frame, and decreases the negative torque.
