Under an alternating magnetic field, magnetic nanoparticles have proven to be a viable heating candidate for biomedical and chemical applications. An RF source in conjunction with a water-cooled spiral coil was used to generate the required magnetic fields. The present work investigates heating characteristics of sol-gel processed ferromagnetic Co/Zn/Ni ferrite nanoparticles with different magnetic properties. The observed correlation between the magnetic properties and heating rate will be discussed in this work.

Augmented reality (AR) systems are often used to superimpose virtual objects or information on a scene to improve situational awareness. Delays in the display system or inaccurate registration of objects destroy the sense of immersion a user experiences when using AR systems. AC electromagnetic trackers are ideal for these applications when combined with head orientation prediction to compensate for display system delays. Unfortunately, these trackers do not perform well in environments that contain conductive or ferrous materials due to magnetic field distortion without expensive calibration techniques. In our work we focus on both the prediction and distortion compensation aspects of this application, developing a "small footprint" predictive filter for display lag compensation and a simplified calibration system for AC magnetic trackers. In the first phase of our study we presented a novel method of tracking angular head velocity from quaternion orientation using an Extended Kalman Filter in both single model (DQEKF) and multiple model (MMDQ) implementations. In the second phase of our work we have developed a new method of mapping the magnetic field generated by the tracker without high precision measurement equipment. This method uses simple fixtures with multiple sensors in a rigid geometry to collect magnetic field data in the tracking volume. The origin and source of intra-plate anorogenic basaltic magmas has been the subject of discussion for several decades. The generation of basaltic magma has been ascribed either to decompression melting triggered by lithospheric extension or to addition of heat supplied by an upwelling mantle plume. These magmas could have been produced from lithospheric or asthenospheric mantle source and also could represent mixing between both sources. The lithospheric mantle is too cold to be considered as a source of alkaline basaltic magmas and only under special conditions (steep geothermal gradient) can produce basaltic magmas. To contribute towards solving these problems this book provides additional evidence from alkaline basalts of Burgenland and SE Styrian Basin at the western margin of the Carpathian-Pannonian Region. The study of anorogenic Cenozoic volcanism of the Carpathian-Pannonian Region offers an excellent opportunity to understand the relationship between tectonics, mantle processes and volcanism in a back-arc setting. Superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles (NPs) have been under intensive investigation in various biomedical applications. However, it is still a challenge to synthesize high quality SPIO NPs for better magnetic performance and less side effects in MRI and magnetic hyperthermia. In this work, well crystalline and control sized hydrophilic SPIO NPs high magnetization (Ms ~ 73 - 86 emu/g) have been synthesized. The SPIO NPs are systematically characterized to identify their structure, surface coating, magnetic properties, cytotoxicity, cellular uptake, relaxivity and specific absorption rate (SAR) properties. In vitro experiments have demonstrated high cellular uptake and low cytotoxicity and the AC magnetic field heating experiments showed high SAR (135-500 Watt/g) and 60-74% tumor cell death due to magnetic hyperthermia. The SPIO NPs have also demonstrated high r2* relaxivity (617.5 s-1mM-1) at 1.5 T and excellent in vivo MRI imaging contrast. In summary, the SPIO NPs are very promising candidate for clinical MRI as well as for magnetic hyperthermia treatment of tumor and thus, could be simultaneously used for cancer diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications

A calculation of Maxwell stress tensor is proposed that leads to the expression of the magnetic force density. By making the link between the magnetic force density and the Maxwell stress tensor we found the magnetic pressure, which support the star from gravitational collapse and we found the strength of magnetic field at the surface of the star. The magnetic field which produces magnetic pressure and magnetic pressure are associated with the electromagnetic vacuum to a perfectly magnetically permeable one. We find a generic result of the surface magnetic field, B ? 1018 G and the magnetic pressure, Pmag 1033 2 cms g which is responsible for the bounce of falling material.
