Specially, the cementitious behavior of pozzolan and Type I Portland Cement has been discussed and compared when subjected to conventional and microwave processing. As-received waste rice husk ash was used to study the effect of microwave-assisted sintering. The interaction between microwave energy and Type I cement–based materials with and without pozzolan materials during the first 24-hours hydration period was investigated. The microstructural characteristics of hydration products in cementitious materials subjected to microwave-irradiated energy based on constant microwave-power levels were studied and compared that with conventional and high-temperature-curing methods. Based on the results of these investigations, this study proposes a theoretical microwave-heating model of cement paste under high-temperature curing using microwave energy and compares the results from experiments using this model with those obtained from more established approaches.

This work covers the development of a six-port and slotted waveguide based measurement system for the determination of the variation of moisture content (mc) of stacked lumber. A Six-port reflectometer was developed and used throughout the trials incorporating an automatic calibration system. In addition the measurement of the dielectric properties of the typical lumber types of Heartwood, Sapwood and internal Branches is examined. Measurements were made using the waveguide cell technique covering the frequency range of 2.3 to 6.5GHz. Both an explicit first order model and multivariate regression analysis of the sensor was proposed and experimental results presented for lumber mc spanning the range of 10 to 180% by dry basis. From these trials a mc measurement error of 3% for the explicit model and 2% for regression of individual boards covering the sensor was determined without incorporating density effects

The somatic and genetic effects of 2.45 GHz Microwave radiation (MWR) on male and female Sprague Dawley rats were studied. One hundred and twenty rats were used for this study, grouped into control and exposed according to the parameters to study. The animals were exposed to various levels of specific absorption rate (SARs) using the microwave generator, model ER660E, Serial No MX704CCR from Toshiba UK Ltd. All animals were kept in healthy, and irradiation free environment with water and feed provided ad libitum. The study is divided into three parts; firstly, the effects of MWR on the anxiolytic and exploratory behavior of the animals. MWR produced dose-dependent significant decrease in the cumulative time spent in the open arms in the first twelve days after exposure and gradually increased towards the control value before the end of two weeks.

This book focuses on fabrication of ZnO/CdS optical sensor. Nanocrystalline ZnO/CdS core-shell optical sensors were fabricated by chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. Vertically aligned ZnO nanorods were firstly synthesized on silicon p-type (111) by CBD method with assist of microwave. The CdS were deposited on the ZnO nanorods to create core-shell structure by using CBD method with cadmium chloride (CdCl2) 0.15M as Cd2+ ion source at difference deposition time. ZnO nanorods were the core and CdS were the shell of this core-shell structure. The photoconductive testing was carried out to test this optical sensor light detection by shining ultraviolet (UV) light pulse on the devices. The devices affect the light absorption and have higher sensitivity to the light. The highest sensitivity reached 53% for the ZnO/CdS optical sensor while the ZnO optical sensor only 6.77% and ZnO/CdS can response to high frequency light pulse. The energy band gap of ZnO/CdS was also lowered to 3.3eV compared to ZnO, 3.38eV. These results demonstrate the existence of CdS has enhanced the ability and the properties of optical sensor compared to ZnO nanorods optical sensor alone.

The crystal structure, microstructure, optical and electrical properties of the films are reported in detail. Microwave energy has previously been shown to have a major influence on the comminution behaviour of minerals and ores. It has been suggested that this is a result of differential expansion/contraction at grain boundaries. This project has investigated the application of high electric field strength microwave energy to minerals and ores and also measured dielectric properties of minerals. Various important ore types and minerals have been selected and their textures, dielectric and thermal properties quantified. Ore strength, using UCS and point load index testing; specific comminution energy using a drop weight tester and grindability and Bond work index using ball mill have all been used to quantify the microwave effect on ores. High electric field strength microwave energy has been found to reduce the required sample cavity residence times to less than 0.2 seconds whilst enabling ore strength reductions of up to 70%. Mineral liberation assessment of microwave treated ores has also been conducted using QEM.SEM analysis and the research concluded with an economic analysis that shows that benefits are achieved with less than one kWh/t of the energy added into the process.

The aims of this study is to evaluate the effect of the of the microwave radiations on the acrylic powder itself by irradiating it with microwave radiation at different power (270watt , 360 watt) ,time (1/4 hr, ? hr), and environmental situations (dry, wet and immersed with water) to see the possibilities of improving its properties by comparing the cured samples prepared from the microwave irradiated acrylic powder with those samples prepared from control and high impact acrylic. The results showed that there is a significant increase in the transverse strength, and decrease in the hardness and residual monomer tests, especially for those groups that prepared at power 360 Watt for ? hr. The water sorption and solubility, dimensional accuracy, showed that there is no significant difference between the tested groups. FTIR test DSC and density test showed that there is a change in the microwave irradiated acrylic in contrast with the control one. Conclusions The results approved that the use of microwave radiation produce an effect on the acrylic powder, and this effect improve the transverse strength and residual monomer concentration of the denture base acrylic specially for 360

Most of the powder metallurgical research on particulate aluminum alloys has been focused on optimizing composition. However, the role of process parameters on sinterability of prealloyed powders still remains to be critically evaluated. First part of the study logically evaluates the effect of sintering atmosphere (nitrogen, argon and vacuum) and temperature on sintered density, electrical, electrochemical and mechanical properties of Al-Cu-Mg, Al-Mg-Si and Al-Zn-Mg alloys. The effect of heat treatment (T4, T6 and T8 tempers) on microstructure and properties was also investigated. In an attempt to make the process less energy intensive and control the grain growth at higher temperature, in second part of the study, higher heating rates were implemented using multimode microwave (2.45 GHz and 6kW) furnace. Microstructural changes and properties were compared between microwave and conventional heated compacts. This book should help to shed some knowledge on new processing technologies, interaction of microwave with conductive materials and especially useful to researchers, professionals and students working in the field of aluminum powder metallurgy and microwave processing.

Microwaves are well-recognized mode of heating material. On account of its fast and relatively uniform heating, microwaves have been envisaged as an ideal means to consolidate particulate materials through sintering. The exact nature of microwave- metal interaction has still not been elucidated in detail. Furthermore, a systematic evaluation of microwave sintered compact with those processed in a conventional furnace is as yet lacking. This study attempts to address these aspects. The first part critically compares the temperature distribution within cylindrical samples heated in both the furnace. It also investigates the effect of varying particle size and porosity on the heating behavior of a metallic particulate compact in a 2.45GHz multimode microwave furnace. The second part systematically investigates the efficacy of microwave vis a vis conventional sintering for a range of multi-component systems. The scope of these studies has been restricted to tungsten and its alloys. This book should help shed some light on this new and exciting technology, and should be especially useful to students and professionals in microwave processing.

Eggshell and membranes which are largely disposed of as waste are a reserve of many bioactive compounds with high economic and monetary value which can be extracted by the efficient separation of eggshell and membrane. Hence, this work concentrates on finding a suitable method for separating the eggshell from membrane. First, the effect of microwave treatment on separation of eggshell and membrane was investigated. The response of a material to electromagnetic radiation depends upon its dielectric properties; therefore, the study of the dielectric properties of eggshell and membrane was carried out in the range of 200 MHz to 20 GHz and in the temperature range of 25 0C to 100 0C. In the second part of the study, the effectiveness of microwave treatment on separation of eggshell and membrane was analyzed in terms of reduction in total energy required to separate the eggshell and membrane and was termed as bond energy. For all microwave treatments, three factors with three levels each were considered. A Model for calculating the bond energy between the eggshell and membrane for all microwave treatments was established.

Hexagonal ferrites are incorporated in microwave communication technology, recording, anti-electromagnetic interference coatings, radar absorbing materials (RAM), transformers and other technological applications. In this work we have synthesized M-type Ba0.5Sr0.5MxFe(12-2x)O19 (M = Co-Ru, Co-Zr and Co-Ti) and Ba(1-x)SrxFe12O19 hexagonal ferrite and characterized ferrite using XRD and SEM. Hysteresis parameters have been investigated as a function of substitution. Complex permittivity, Complex permeability and Reflection loss have been studied as a function of frequency (X-band), substitution and thickness. Sample 1.0 of Co-Zr ferrite shows maximum absorption with reflection loss of -37 dB at 12.08 GHz, rendering its use for microwave absorber application. High temperature enhances dielectric properties in comparison to the magnetic properties in Ba0.5Sr0.5MxFe(12-2x)O19 and Ba(1-x)SrxFe12O19 ferrite. Saturation magnetization increases in Ba0.5Sr0.5MxFe(12-2x)O19 ferrite at lower substitution whereas it decreases at higher substitution. Remanence magnetization is increases: with Sr ions substitution in Ba(1-x)SrxFe12O19 ferrite and in the undoped sample 0.0 of Ba0.5Sr0.5MxFe(12-2x)
